I agree with every single thing you said…I really feel that this Asian man must have become so assimilated into white culture that he felt entitled to say that…smh. This ignorance really needs to stop. I’m Nigerian and I was once told by another black person to go back to Africa (it was a “joke” apparently, but the way it was said at the time hurt nonetheless). I just smiled, punched him in the arm and laughed it off but I was really bothered by that statement because it showed that there is a divide even in African American culture. I guess we all get to this place where we are comfortable with ourselves and our surrounds and we attack anything different that may come our way..it shouldn’t be like this, but it is.
@ Dee I’m sorry that happened to you. You’re right, their is definitely a divide between, Black Americans, West Indians, Africans, etc. Misunderstandings and blatant ignorance can often lead one to develop a false sense of superiority, that often rears it’s ugly head in a “joke.”
As one of my friends stated, “historically, when marginalized groups are violently oppressed, they often adopt the ideology of the oppressor and find some way to oppress another group to find a false sense of empowerment.”
